Toom's Tidbits

We'll get to the picks here shortly. Reading the paper today I got to thinking how cool it would be to be a high school senior and be able to make recruiting visits to the schools of your choice. I don't know how many are allowed but here is how I would play it. Feel free to add your own list.

TOP TEN

Columbia - If I knew then what I know now. How can you beat an Ivy League education in the greatest city in the world?

Harvard - Another city trip. Go early so you can take in a Red Sox game and not freeze, or freeze away at the Yale game.

UGA - This would be my last trip, just to see how these guys get treated.

USC - Combination between a women trip and a city trip and a prestigious school trip.

Notre Dame - Rudy! Rudy!

Michigan - Ohio State weekend would be my preference.

Oregon - More of a scenic trip to a place I've never been. Plus to see if all the hype about the fans is true.

Army - Tradition, campus trip. Life on the Hudson.

Air Force - Always heard this is a beautiful place to watch a football game.

Princeton - Often cited as the nation's top undergraduate institution. Plus a really unique campus life, from what I hear. I'd go that weekend when they all take their clothes off and run down the hill.

The rest...

Miami - Been there several times but to go through the eyes of a pampered athlete would be fun. Plus, you could try to get them to violate some NCAA reg. which seems par for the course.

Virginia - I've always wanted to see the campus.

Nebraska - Gotta be a game weekend to see what the nation's best fanbase is truly like.

Texas - Austin is another place I'd like to visit.

Penn State - Huge stadium and beautiful setting for football. I'd love to go when it's snowing.

Stanford - Beautiful campus, academic prestige.

San Diego State - Purely a destination trip. Never been. Gotta check out the zoo so I can report back to Chunk.

UNLV - Vegas baby!

Cal - See how the cradle of west coast intelligensia operates. Not a bad city, either.

Ole Miss - women

Liberty - crazy campus reputation where one can really go nuts! Kidding.

Georgetown - destination. Been there and love it.

Citadel - Charleston, SC seen through the eyes of a revered athlete. Need I say more?

I would also visit UT, USC, Auburn, Florida, Tech, only to talk about how this place stinks and how Athens is so much better. Maybe I can take a couple down with me. I would also claim at each place that the head coach offered to pay me and then molested me. I think that would go over well.

There it is. As for last week's picks, it was not a good week. i did key on Indy, Notre Dame, and NC St so it wasn't as bad as it looks...

ATS: 2-6; 8-15 overall
SU: 4-4; 16-7

Golf shootout - pretty ugly. I came nowhere near to covering and I really don't know what everyone shot. Let's just say the bowling was more compelling.

Wake-8.5 v UNC
Wake didn't cover.

Notre Dame-13 v Navy
Easy money.

NCState v Virginia
Lost this one too.

FSU-4.5 v Maryland
Maryland straight up. They're actually 3-1 in the conference.

Florida-14 v UGA
Dawgs proved me wrong

Mississippi State+1.5 v Kentucky
Nope.

PROS

Bengals-4.5 v Falcons
Falcons prove me wrong.

Bears-16.5 v 49ers

Colts+3 v Denver
Colts keep getting it done. Barely, but they got it done.

Assuming that you were a huge recruit that the big dogs want, you've got to hit at least one Division II or at least a Division I AA school just to create a buzz and to be the BMOC. Even at those "non-football" schools the players are the best from their High School. To have a guy from rival.com's top 10 show up at a place like Davidson with recruits like me who would not have made the top 3000 would create quite a buzz. You'd definitely be the man for the weekend.
So you will know, I did tour, but it was after the season was over; Definitely not the way to go.

As for the Dawgs, glad they benched Milner. I dropped 2 passes in 11 years of football (they didn't throw me that many, but they plague me to this day). I know the game, the locations on the field, and the plays that were called. To think that the other 10 guys and the coaches did their jobs well enough to put the ball in my hands and I squandered it was devastating. I counted 4 Milner drops and one by MoMass. Yeah, number 1 was a head-hunter and cheap-shotted Milner in the 1st half, but you've got to catch the ball. He's going to hit you anyway; you might as well catch the ball.

You get 5 official visits....ie- school pays for travel, hotel expenses, food, etc....and unlimited self-paid visits. I would be at Stanford, Michigan, FSU, Virginia, and UCLA for football. For Baseball it would be Stanford, Pepperdine, Clemson, LSU, and Cal St. Fullerton. I would end up at UGA after unofficial visits for both sports.

If 5 is all I could get...paid for that is.....
1. Notre Dame....would just have to see it for myself....it's touchdown Jesus for crying out loud.
2. Michigan....two words BIG HOUSE.
3. USC....The Mighty Trojans
4. Penn State....Happy Valley, home to the best uniforms in college football.
5. The Ohio State University....just want to see a game in the Horse Shoe.

Then I would of course commit to the Dawgs.

I think if I had it to do over again some schools I would like to visit assuming I could meet requirements...ok, pretending I could.

College of Charleston....the south's greatest city (Athens excluded) and where the girl/guy ratio is 3 to 1

Georgia Southern....Statesboro has come a long way in the last 10 years.

Davidson....dated a girl who went there and so did her brother...really liked the campus, what I got to see....oh and one word JEBO!

Naval Academy/West Point....How cool would it be to be a part of one of these games....even just in the stands.

NYU....Greatest city in the world.

University of Washington.... I love Seattle...could easily live there.

Harvard....Can it get better than Cambridge?

Hofstra....Who wouldn't want to be a Flying Dutchman??

Texas....I hear Austin is great.

Are you saying the girl's brother dated her too? That's pretty gross, dude.

Chris has some good picks. AC actually approaches it as if he's going to play there!

Yeah, just being Joe Schmo, I'd have looked at some other places, too.

College of Charleston I was there just a few weeks ago and stayed right by campus. No matter what I say, it won't do it justice, because it was off the chizzle.

I mean, you CAN'T attend there if you're not good looking. And if you're just good looking and not hot, you are on probation. And you must jog downtown in the most unbelievable attire.

Course a guy at the bank told me their students have the highest number of STDs in the nation. Sorta puts a damper on things a bit.

Georgia Southern - uh, what???

Davidson....while the Jebo factor is strong and there are other notable alums: Mal McSwain, Harold Hall (my uncle), you pretty much need a 1400 to sniff the joint. Their women aren't much to write about, but the campus is pretty.

Naval Academy/West Point....No doubt. I visited Annapolis last year and it is very cool.

NYU....I concur. Went with Columbia for prestige and to have that Seinfeld/upper Westside feel to it but life in the Village would do just fine, thank you. No football team but that may be better than the Lions who are 0-4 in the Ivy League and I think lost every game last year.

If I were smart enough and rich enough, this would be my choice. Columbia for undergrad and stay local for law school or business. And if NY got old for whatever reason, up the street to Cambridge or Yale for grad school. Gotta be within a train ride from the Big Apple though.

Hofstra - No longer the flying Dutchmen. Only reason I know this is I have a client who went there. Changed their name to the Pride. Not very popular with the students, of course.

I would also add Furman, just because they have a beautiful campus, a good distance from home, good football, good-looking girls, and top-notch academics. The best thing I can say about Furman is the people I know that went there seem to be really solid folks.

If Hofstra is no longer the Dutchmen, I'll have to recend that one.....because then you're just going to school on Long Island.....I'll replace that with.....Winthrop, small school in Rock Hill, SC. I worked in Rock Hill a good bit and AC told me I needed to go see the campus...really nice and a really like Rock Hill.

If there has been one positive aspect to Title IX which demands equal dollars for women's sports is the impact it has had on the number of fetching young women at Davidson. It has been a long road from being an all male insititution, and when I was there we were at 60/40 male to female. The supply was so small and the demand so high that I had no capital to compete. Now Davidson's 1600 students consists of women's basketball, soccer, tennis, field hockey, cross country, and cheerleading teams, and the old gym has been transformed into a line of treadmills and stair climbers rivaling your neighborhood Gold's Gym. As much as I hate Title IX, for Davidson it has brought in an influx of attractive and athletic female students who were not there 10 years ago.

Thanks, Jebo.....I was trying to figure out if I should be offended.....I mean Toom all but called the girl I dated ugly so I'll say that she was a product of Title IX....even though she didn't play any sports......
