Quote of the Day
We fear so deeply what we think other people see in us, so we talk in order to straighten out their understanding. ...One of the fruits of silence is the freedom to let our justification rest entirely with God.
Some say Jonathan Edwards took this idea to an extreme when charges were brought against him and he was forced to leave his pastorate in New England. The charges were patently false, and yet he stubbornly refused to defend himself.
Not coincidentally, the ensuing years were overwhelmingly fruitful, as it was during this time period that Edwards wrote most of his important theological works.
This represents a very specific problem for me and it's good to be reminded.
