After a disappointing report (albeit expected) from the conference commisioner meeting, it appears we are stuck with the current system for now. May as well do a little more griping.
BCS Bowl wins and appearances by conference
Conference W L Pct School(s)
ACC
4 different schools 1 9 0.10
The good: Not much. Free Shoes wins the National Championship by beating the Vick-led Hokies
The bad: Not only have you failed to get a single at-large team in, your record speaks for itself. You have become the conference champion no one wants to play because it doesn't mean anything to beat you. Has any team done less and received more opportunity than FSU? OK, maybe Notre Dame.
The ugly: 2002: Florida 56, Maryland 23
Big 12
7 different schools 6 8 0.429
The good: The Big 12 averages an at-large team once a year. Great performances by Texas in 2005 and 2006. Kansas surprised some folks last year.
The bad: Surprising that the record isn't better. It seems poor overall defense in conference play creates a false sense of strength. Oklahoma has really stunk up the place lately, losing 4 in a row.
The ugly: Nebraska shouldn't have made the Rose in 2002...and got thumped for it. This is one of the few conferences Ohio State can actually handle in post-season.
Big East
6 different schools 6 4 0.600
The good: The Big East continues to over-achieve with the likes of West Virginia, even despite reorganization taking some of their best teams. 6 teams having made it speaks to overall parity.
The bad: No at-large bids, despite usually fielding at least 2 strong teams.
The ugly: Syracuse gets hammered by Florida, 31-10 in 1999. Even worse, Utah 35, Pitt 7. Ug-ly
Big Ten
7 different schools 8 9 0.471
The good: 8-9 surprised the heck out of me. Michigan over Alabama in a great game in 2000. OSU in 2003 winning the NC.
The bad: Wait a minute, wait a minute. Wisconsin wins back to back Rose Bowls against crappy teams. Penn State beats 8-4 FSU by a field goal in a great game of mediocrity. Ohio State over A&M? Over K State? And over Notre Dame?
The ugly: Illinois has actually been twice! The Big 10 has had 17 entries into the BCS. That statement stands alone as absolute proof in the corruption of this system!
MWC
1 school 1 0 1.000
Pac-10
7 different schools 8 4 0.667
The good: 8-4 is pretty darn good. USC is pretty darn good. 5-1 and one loss in that fantastic Texas game. Oregon thumps Colorado in 2002. Oregon State REALLY thumps Notre Dame.
The bad: The rest of these guys have one appearance each, which speaks more to the system being flawed than parity in the conference, I'm afraid. WS, UCLA, and Stanford all losers. Example: Washington wins in 2001 but they beat a mediocre Purdue team.
SEC
6 different schools 11 4 0.733
The good: Half the time, the SEC manages to get 2 schools in. The Rose won't have any SEC teams, preferring mediocrity, so the SEC doesn't have a lot of those mismatches to point to. Also, the other big conferences have one team dominate the series (OU, OSU, USC, FSU) while the SEC puts LSU, Florida, GA in regularly. LSU is 4-0. Take note: SINCE 2001, THE SEC IS 9-1 IN BCS GAMES WITH A COMBINED SCORE OF 362-197!!!
The bad: It is hard to imagine there being anyone else in who is not one of the Big 6. UGA losing to WVU was a surprise. Bama loses a close one after a missed FG to Michigan. Florida got pounded by Miami in 2001. Tennessee got theirs in 2000.
The ugly: Auburn goes undefeated, doesn't make the NC game
WAC
2 different schools 1 1 0.500
Independent
1 school 0 3 0.000
The ugly: Notre Dame is 0-3 with a combined score of 116-43
