Ridiculous Garbage

Here's an article that appeared in the Athens paper on UGA's secondary violations. If the headline gets your attention, read on, because these violations would be a funny parody, were they not real.

Georgia self-reports NCAA secondary violations

Georgia self reported 14 NCAA secondary violations in the first six months of 2008, according to information obtained by the Banner- Herald in an open records request.

The violations involved eight of Georgia's athletic programs.

Football had five violations while track and field and gymnastics had two each.

Georgia reported on May 12 a violation that a football recruit and his family were provided transportation by athletic representatives. Another football violation from Feb. 25 involved non-coaching staff members getting supplemental pay from the Athletic Association's booster club without the pay being deposited with the university.

The latest football violation was reported on June 17 when it was discovered that the coaching staff evaluated a recruit's high school three times during the spring evaluation period, one more than is permitted.

A men's basketball violation reported on March 10 involved an outside consultant reviewing game/ practice film and then providing the coaching staff with athlete-specific analysis of free throw shooting technique. NCAA rules say outside consultants may not be involved in analyzing game tape.

A track athlete competed beyond the NCAA Division I five-year period after failing to disclose previous full-time collegiate enrollment, the school reported in March.

Three of the violations involved giving impermissible meals or snacks to teams.

Baseball players got an extra snack/meal during a road game. Women's golfers received per diem for meals in connection with a home competition and members of the gymnastics team received an extra snack/meal during a road meet.

Secondary violations are considered isolated or inadvertent. Georgia did not detail in information what corrective action it took in each instance.

Other violations included:

A football coaching staff member phoned a recruit twice during the same week and a football recruit took an unofficial visit the same day as his high school had a competition.

A gymnastics coaching staff member engaged in an off-campus evaluation during the April dead period.

The swimming program practiced one day beyond the 144-day season.

A women's soccer player bought nonrequired textbooks/supplies at the bookstore on her athletic book scholarship.

A track recruit came on an official visit before being added to Georgia's request list at the NCAA Eligibility Center.
