Before Anyone Gets Too Excited....

about the penalty situation.....let me just state 2 lines of evidence for all to relax.

2007- LSU- 2nd in Nation with 117 total penalties for 880 yards (second only to Cincinatti)

2006- Florida- Led the Nation with 116 penalties for 888 yards.

Both of those obviously led the SEC in penalties/yard for their respective year.

If memory serves....both of these teams won the National Championship in their respective year.

My beefs from Saturday include:

Penalities (yes, I'm concerned)
Kickoffs and Coverage
Special Teams Substitutions (coaches don't seem to have it together yet; Timeouts should not be needed to punt the ball)

2 of the Saturday's 15 yard penalties were not legitimate in my opinion. I believe they called Dobbs for roughing the passer when even Herbstreet called it hogwash. The Defensive holding call that negated the interception was really iffy as well.

Having said that, I do think that we are hurting ourselves with these penalties, and at this rate they could cost us the championship in a close game.

The two teams above were not great because they had a ton of penalties. Those teams were great enough to overcome their penalties. Some late hits and roughing the passer penalties come from having an aggressive, head-hunting defense which most championship teams have. So far, we are that good, but the schedule ahead is hard enough without making things harder through undisciplined play.

If you check the stats you will probably find a lot of almost great teams with a lot of penalties as well.

The thing that concerned me most about penalties on Saturday was the

1) roughing the passer 'penalty' (was that Brian Evans). That's the second good clean hit on the passer we've had in consecutive games that was called. And in both instances, the announcer rightly said it was bogus.

2) the tripping penalty on Mo. It negated a big play and it was total BS.

That's Florida, Auburn, and ASU that I've felt there was almost a conspiracy to get us after the Jacksonville celebration.

And what about that stat showing the last 3 teams who dropped 2 spots from #1 without losing a game, ALL went on to win the NC.

The two biggies from Sat that I thought were complete crap were the Dobbs Pers. Foul on the QB and MoMass "Tripping" a player that was 3 yards behind the play. The other 15-yarder that I still fail to understand was called on Demiko...for having one foot land on someone's leg while attempting to block the field goal. How is that a 15 yarder? Didn't affect anything in the end...as the Dawgs held 'em again and forced another FG....but they are completely taking away a chance at blocking a FG with great athleticism. It now takes a breakdown in the O-line to get one blocked.

I just think its great to see 1st and 20 on the screen and know that we most likely will get a first down. Alabama will have trouble matching up with our speed at wide receivers. I am still very concerned with our O-line because of the blitz's of Saben's but history shows that against Saben at home is a good thing. I still don't believe the Clemson game vs. Alabama was a good indication of how good they are. They have not been tested in their 3 other games. Arkansas is very bad!!! We just didn't see them get beat down by Texas the week before due to Ike. I think Special teams will be a huge this Saturday. We must cover kicks this week...Finally, What big game has John Parker Wilson guided the Tide to Victory?
