Question of the Day

Willie Martinez has interviewed for the FIU job.......now, there are 5 other coaches on the list so it is far from a done deal......so I have several questions........1. Do I want him to leave? I was not as unhappy with him this season as some others...I just felt the D was not executing maybe a little more than something being wrong in the system...that's just me. 2. If he does indeed get the job, should we and could we get Muschamp away from the plainsmen, tigers, war eagles? 3. And if not him, then who?

I'm with you. I saw that and my immediate thought was, "Oh no!" then I thought, wait a minute, that might not be too bad.

Is Joe Kines a crazy thought? Guy continues to produce. Perhaps we cherry pick the ACC and get Tenuta. (wouldn't that drive Tech crazy!) Clemson, BC, and VT all have good D, thought I don't know what the coordinators are like.

I'm not sure what I would think about Muschamp - he calls some crazy blitzes. (think LSU, GA/AU, AU/AL)

Internally, I guess you could go with Garner, but his hands are full with recruting job and positions, and I think he got the 'assistant head coach' title. LB coach is not a candidate in my opinion.

Hopefully, Richt knows someone (ala Van Gorder) who is just laying low and really knows how to get after it.

I'm sure there are guys out there that we don't know about....just like you said...nobody knew Van Gorder. I think the thing with Muschamp is...you can't judge by his AU stint....he has a control freak for a head coach and I don't think he is free to run his D so to speak....think back to LSU, that D was nasty and he learned from Saban. I for one LOVE that style of play if you have the guys to do it...it produced a National Title...but, I am also with you...others are out there. Joe Kines...Bend Don't break baby....Muschamp played in that D as well I think.

I haven't been very impressed with Martinez as a whole but I think it could be a lot worse. If you look at his whole body of work he has generally struggled against teams that have creative high powered offenses. That being said I agree that there have been serious issues with execution this year. Let's face it, the talent level this year is not up to par with the last few. So, I would have to know who he was being replaced by before I gave a true opinion but I wouldn't think the world was coming to an end.

Joe Kines...no thanks. Been there done that. I am just not a fan of the bend don't break it drives me CRAZY. You can't dispute his track record though. I believe Bama has been top 5 in scoring D since he's been there.

Muschamp-It's weird, I'm kinda with Toom because it seems like our offensive staff has been able to exploit him the last few times they have faced him. A lot of other teams have not been so lucky and I would not be disappointed to see him come here.

One thing that nobody has mentioned is that there could be an up and comming NFL position coach where a college DC would be a logical next step. I don't know of any myself.

I got faith in Richt to do the right thing.

And that is the knock on Muschamp. Remember LSUs corners coming to town being real mouthy in 04? and we blew them out. You have to have the horses to do it.

Against sophistication (read: Richt) the Muschamp scheme is iffy. It is designed for SEC ball and that means stop the run and pressure the qb. High risk, high return. A pro style offense, relying on finesse - a qb who can check, receivers who thrive in one on one coverage, will beat this defense. Of course there's nothing that says he can't adjust.

The upside is, we would probably dominate the teams you're supposed to dominate. Downside might be an over-reliance on blitz and giving up big plays against good teams who can outsmart you. But, it sort of negates the trick stuff (spread option) because it shifts the guesswork over to the offense - to guess what the D is doing.

I guess it is all moot until something else comes out. Personally, I was not impressed with that list of candidates and based on that, the job might be his if he wants it.

Again, not sure if he'll get that job or not....I won't be upset if he stays....again I think it was more execution and talent than anything...my thing is this, while Richt has been at Georgia he has set the tone for the staff, for the most part....I don't think that is different anywhere else...so how Muschamp has looked under Saban and Tubbs could be much different under Mark....it will be fun to see what happens....and I know I'm not the only one who is not a fan of how Tubby treats his coaches...I'd want out of the plains too.

i hope he stays...our problem on D this year is the O. They have not been scoring and we turn the ball over on our own side of the field. you can't ask the D to keep people from scoring if they only have to go 50yds or less to score. one pass play and they are in field goal range. plus with out the O scoring, teams are not having to play catch up with georgia this year and that changes the play calling when you are not playing from behind. We are still 9th in the nation in total D. Despite playing on our side of the field a ton.
