Thug Life

The Falcons are in real trouble......the news conference this afternoon should be interesting. My question is this......is anybody really surprised?!?!?!......I don't mean that anyone could have guessed how he would get in trouble.......but did you really think he would stay out of it???? I have been pleasantly surprised that the race card hasn't come up (at least that I have heard)....which tells me that nobody...and I mean nobody wants to touch this thing with a 10 foot pole. In my opinion the Falcons made this bed......you can not tell me that when they drafted him they were unaware of his background and therefore the potential for him to get into trouble (see Marcus Vick)......I heard a guy on ESPN a while back make the statement about Vick and others in the NFL..."If you're a thug at 20.....you'll be a thug at 30...you'll just have more money." .......could that be more true??

This, again in my opinion, speaks to a larger issue in most pro sports but more so in the NBA and the NFL.....you take kids who are incredibly talented but that have grown up in less than ideal circumstance in less than ideal areas with less talented and less than ideal friends and you give them the keys to the world and expect that they are ready for the spotlight, pressure and ridiculous money being thrown at them......Tank Johnson, Pac Man Jones, Randy Moss, Alan Iverson, etc.... The Falcons are no different than any other pro organization....they all see the world through green colored glasses.....in the end it's a money thing...plain and simple. Look at the lifestyle that is so glorified by people in Vick's age group....and it's not just Black kids....it's White kids, Hispanic kids, Asian kids.......how many rap videos have pit bulls or rotties in them?? That is not a make believe culture.....it exists.....and I think people are about to see that up close. What gets me is that nobody cares until it becomes real....and this again goes back to what we have talked about many times here on the PRF.......truth as relative and reality as subjective......if it doesn't affect me...does it even exist??

Is Mike Vick responsible for his actions? He darn well better be......is it his fault that he grew up where he did, has the talent he has, had all the fame and money put at his feet? No, it's not....but that doesn't excuse him from personal responsibility or human decency.

The Falcons gambled.....I don't blame them for that.....Vick is superman in pads.....but I also don't feel bad for them because they assumed the risk. I think it is very possible that Mike Vick never wears a Falcons jersey again.........

This morning I heard a clip from Letterman and Drew Carey. Carey said if Vick plays, he is done with the NFL. Made me think...

Unfortunately, the worst thing Vick could've done as a politically charged individual in a politically charged culture and in an arena (NFL) obsessed with image visa vis the KWAN, you can alienate a fanbase if you have the support of another. Had vick alienated the redneck, "we need a white qb" contingent, probably nothing else to discuss here. But he's alienated PETA, which gets the liberal polys on your back. anything to this, or am I blowing smoke?

As far as Vick as an individual, didn't we know the story would not end well? After some tinkering with the offense and several years of finding a coach, a scheme, or lack of personnel to blame, it has become more and more clear that he just doesn't have what it takes.

The real tragedy would be if he was a stellar qb and all this happened. People who are upset see him as a stellar qb and that's why they're upset. I think it saves Falcon fans years of further frustration and allows the team to move on. Vick himself is the loser in all this, but since he is apparently incapable of realizing the reality of his own actions, is a monumental collapse, unrealized, really a collapse? If a tree falls in the woods...?

That's a good point.....I think we all kind of got set up in his first year.....his ability.....but it didn't take the rest of the league long to figure out a way to stop him....and as it seems to turn out...he can't adjust to what they are doing on defense.... I think you're right about the PETA thing....abortion?? no big deal...kill a dog....you're going to the deepest level of hell.....and keep in mind that I love animals...especially dogs..but doesn't that seem a bit off base?
