So Just Where is 'Pea Ridge'?
I saw my grandmom (Meme, for those of you "in the know") for the first time in a while last night....and she finally answered my question that I forwarded on to her a few weeks back. Turns out that her email has been down, but she rememebered to tell me last night where the traditional "Pea Ridge" is. In general, it was halfway between Decatur and Tucker. More specifically it began at Frazier Road on the Decatur side and went to Cooledge (down Hwy 29) and to Midvale (down LaVista) on the Tucker side. So there you have it. That is the Pea Ridge....from one who should know (Meme).

Yeah, I have heard for quite some time that general description being halfway between Tucker and Decatur. Based on that description, I always felt like the term fit us extremely well being that I lived in Tucker but went to school in Decatur with the church being almost smack in the middle.
Also, one might think that crossing 285 on 29 gets you into Decatur. To illustrate, my old neighborhood was outside 285 by about 100 yards and my grandmother's house was inside 285 by about 30 yards. My address was Tucker, her's was Decatur. BUT, if you go inside the Perimeter and turn RIGHT onto Montreal, that's still Tucker. Does anyone know how far down you can go on 29, turn right, and still be in Tucker? Another weird one, Heather's old house right where Frazier meets LaVista - that is in Atlanta while Briarlake Baptist is in Decatur.
All this to point out that the old-timers had it right. That piece that gets kinda blurry? That be Pea Ridge. Still, I wonder why the name, "Rehoboth" didn't stick as a community being that you had two churches and a school bearing the name.
To me, the heart of Pea Ridge is the area you speak of from Cooledge down to Frazier. But really, I think you can say in a broader sense, 29 down to North DeKalb mall and out east to Stidham's house. That about captures it for me. Also, I don't afford the north / south the same grace as I think once you get on LaVista, you've left Pea Ridge and once you cross 78, you've left Pea Ridge.
Pea Ridge geography might be a moving target, but I think we've proven, it is more a state of mind than definable by borders.
